Headaches Q & A

What is a headache?

Depending on the type and cause, headaches can range from mild throbbing across the skull to intense stabbing sensations in the face or head. They can last less than an hour or go on for days at a time.

Some headaches, like migraines, are agonizing and require special drugs and therapies. Other headaches are symptoms of more severe conditions, like infections, strokes, or tumors, and need immediate medical attention.

What are the different kinds of headaches?

Headaches – of which there are more than 150 types – fall into two major categories: primary and secondary.

Primary headaches: Primary headaches are not usually associated with an underlying disease or disorder. There are three common types:

  • Tension: stress or anxiety-related head pain related to tensed muscles in your shoulders, neck, and jaw
  • Cluster: extremely painful; isolated to one area, usually an eye
  • Migraine: causes crippling pain that can last hours or even days

Secondary headaches: Secondary headaches arise from head injuries or a variety of health conditions, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Nerve disorders
  • Fever and infection
  • Reactions to medication
  • Psychiatric issues
  • Stroke
  • Tumors

What causes headaches?

Primary headaches usually occur when stress overstimulates pain-sensitive nerves in your head. Genetics can also play a role, especially with migraines.

Regardless of the underlying disorder, secondary headaches occur when inflammation or swelling puts pressure on the nerves in your skull. Whether caused by a tumor or a head injury, the mechanics are the same.

How are chronic headaches diagnosed and treated?

During your consultation at Pain Solvers, your physician reviews your medical history and performs a thorough physical and neurological exam. Diagnosing your condition might require tests and lab work, including:

  • Blood tests and urinalysis

  • CT scans, MRIs, or other neuroimaging techniques
  • An EEG to measure your brain activity

After diagnosing your headache, your physician develops a customized course of therapy.
